I first used an engraver when I decided it was time to transfer my seeds to metal plates. It was a steep learning curve, even with past use of engravers. A good tip for the engraver and good penmanship helps with engraving. But do a few tests on similar metal before going full bore into new plates. I was never happy with my plates so decided to grind down my plates and use punches.
The punches out there that you’d normally buy are so so but if you want good punches that have good markings. You’ll pay more than $10 for them and not at harbor freight lol. I had a set that I’ve had for years with nice deep lettering that I had to cut down. At first they were doing great but swinging a 5pd hammer over 600 times is tiring. A regular claw hammer isn’t heavy enough. Maybe if it was a cheap softer steel but you’ll want titanium or similar plates. I cut down my punches so I could fit them in my vice and I pressed in each letter. It took a few hours to get them perfect but they look great. One day if I’m bored ill fill in the letters with epoxy or paint them lol.
Just take your time with whatever you decide to do.
