      Hallo!

What sorts of cryptos did you hold using your Ledger? There are some 3rd party apps that work with the device, and that might be an option for you if Ledger Live is refusing to work with it due to an outdated firmware or apps.

For example, Electrum can be used with the device to transfer BTC, or Metamask/MyCrypto/MyEtherWallet can be used to transfer ETH and many of the other ETH-based blockchains and tokens.

Try connecting it to Metamask or Coinbase Wallet and sending that way.

I found out that using Metamask, Electrum etc. could bypass the update. Thanks for suggestions everyone.

Unfortunately if you no longer have the 24 word seed you are out of luck.

This is a good reminder to always secure the words. And to be on top of updating your Ledger.

If the funds are substantial (like more than seven figures) it may be worthwhile to hire someone (a cut of your funds) to “crack” the Ledger to retrieve your keys. It may not even be possible, but people find clever ways to do things

If you lost your seed phrase, the only safe way is to recover all your crypto by using the ledger device as-is. Updating the ledger firmware is very risky, because if the ledger device reset during the update process, it would wipe its seed, and you would lose permanently access to all your cryptos.

What is the firmware version on your ledger?

Depending on the ledger version, and depending on what crypto you have there are different options to recover your cryptos.

      For BTC:

All BTC accounts created with ledger devices with Bitcoin app version 1.0.2 and later can be recovered using Electrum, connected to the ledger device.

On win 10/11, you may have to run Electrum in admin mode (right-click the Electrum icon, then select Run as administrator). Also make sure to close Ledger Live.

Make sure your ledger device is connected, unlocked, and in the Bitcoin app (make sure that „Browser Support is OFF in the Bitcoin app settings). In Electrum, follow: new account > standard account > use hardware device > select your ledger > select „legacy“, then Next.

This will go to legacy account #0, i.e. derivation path m/44’/0’/0′

If your account is segwit (addresses start with „3“) or native segwit type (addresses start with „bc1q“), select „p2sh-segwit“ or „native segwit“ instead of „legacy“.

If you have multiple BTC legacy accounts (or if your account is not account #0), you can reach your other accounts by changing the derivation path to m/44’/0’/n‘ (where n is the account number). E.g. to reach account #1, use m/44’/0’/1′ . The account number is the 3rd number in the derivation path (this is also true with p2sh-segwit and native segwit accounts).

      For ETH and ERC20 tokens:

You may be able to recover access with MetaMask, MyEtherWallet or MyCrypto, but if your ledger firmware is too old, none of the existing front-ends will work. However there are other ways to recover. We developed low level tools to recover ETH and ERC20 secured by very old ledger devices, see:
