This is totally normal and nothing to be concerned about. In fact if words couldn’t possibly repeat, it would mean there would be less total combinations of words to choose from, making your seed phrase easier to crack.

It’s actually around 11% chance for that to happen. So yes, one in every 9-10 seeds has double words.

Yes, totally normal. Nothing to worry about. I have a few wallets that have the same word used twice in the seed phrase.

As u/VariousJackfruit mentioned, seeing the same word repeated more than once in a single 24 word recovery phrase is completely safe and actually normal/expected.

This type of modular approach allows for flexibility in the [BIP39 mnemonic standard](https://www.blockplate.com/pages/bip-39-wordlist), meaning that each combination of letters (and words in each unique 24 word recovery phrase) creates more and more possibilities for different recovery phrases (private keys) to exist.

On a technical level, this is due to the PBKDF2 hashing algorithm, constantly hashing and re-hashing the private key each time a new word/round is added to the entire mnemonic, as a whole.

In this manner, the possibilities for generating unique 24 word recovery phrases are virtually endless, however extremely resilient, such that attempting to crack 24 word recovery phrases using computation is infeasible/impossible.

This is the beauty and elegance of cryptography, in action!

      > Is it usual to have two words within a 24 word seed phrase the same?

      It can happen.

If repeated words were deliberately avoided, that would dramatically reduce the entropy associated with seed phrases.

      > Is it worth changing the seed phrase. Can this be done while keeping the keys on the cold wallet?

Your keys **are** your seed phrase. >!(To be pedantic, your keys are mathematically derived *from* your seed phrase.)!<

It would not be possible to keep the same keys and the same account number, while changing your seed phrase.

It’s fine to leave it as is.

To deliberately avoid a pattern would give hackers an easier chance to guess your seed phrase. For example, if they knew for sure that no word was ever repeated, there would be fewer permutations to attempt.

On the other hand, to deliberately insist that your seed phrase has a repeated word would also reduce the number of possibilities that a hacker would need to guess.

The best solution is to just have an open mind and choose to accept what the Ledger Nano gives you, without caring if there is or isn’t a repeated word.

About as normal as drawing a double when you throw 2 dices.

Each word is selected randomly in a 2048 words list, independently of sll other words previously picked. So yes, there a pretty good chance to have repeated words on a 24 word list. About 11% chances if you do the math.

If you dont like your seed, you can always get the ledger to generate a new one. But seed phrases generated by the ledger are always 100% safe, regardless of any repeated words in them.

I wish my ledger was the rare one with 24 of the same word. It’d be so fucking easy to memorize
