It really is essential to know the basics about private and public keys, seed, how hardware wallets work etc. We’ll do our best to cover that all.

Trezor Crypto Key

I respectfully disagree. Wallet is a great marketing term and summarizes it’s main function in the eyes of most consumers – it “holds” your money. Of course this isn’t technically true but you need an easy way to onboard new users. Whether we like it or not it’ll take very many years before actually give a crap about the inner workings of a trezor!

I had the same confusion as a noob!

Adding to the confusion, exchanges use the term „wallet“ constantly. Your BTC is in your Bitcoin wallet at Coinbase, and you have been told you need to have your crypto in a wallet, so you think it’s fine.

So, crypto wallet’s recovery phrase/seed => private/public keys

Should of just called them keys. Crypto keys sounds good enough

Good post, to give you crypto newbies an example, I use my Trezor with a variety of wallets.

Trezor Suite, Exodus, ADAlite and Metamask to name a few.

Exodus and Metamask are basically hot wallets, which means they store their keys online for anyone to grab if they manage to hack their account. However, you can also use these with your Trezor as a key. Which means the seed on your trezor will be used, instead of the seed on the hot wallet. This way nobody will be able to send crypto from those wallets accounts unless they have your Trezor.

So again, your Trezor is a key, not a wallet and your Crypto is stored decentralized on the blockchain, not on your Trezor. If you ever loose your Trezor you can safely restore all your crypto with any BIP39 compatible wallet by using your Trezor seedphrase.

I like the term keyring for hw wallet. I imagine a vault full of safe deposit boxes. Those boxes are the addresses where I store my crypto. I use the key on my keyring to open those boxes if I want to spend or move the contents around. If I lose the key I’m screwed because it’ll take a locksmith 1000s of years to get the box open, but losing the keyring isn’t a big deal. I can just buy a new one. And of course it’s important to have a spare key (i.e. backup your seed)!

Yep. And if you’re on a UTXO chain like Bitcoin, there’a a whole other layer of understanding there that what you own is not “coins,” but the rights to spend a set of unspent transaction outputs, as indicated on the blockchain. Assuming you have access to the corresponding private key, of course.
