Ich habe jetzt seit über einem Jahr ein Ledger und kenne meine Seed-Phrase auswendig und habe sie in einem Safe aufbewahrt. Ich verstehe, was sie bewirkt, aber was ich nicht verstehe, ist, wenn ich mein aktuelles Gerät verliere und auf einem neuen Gerät wiederherstellen muss, wie genau bekomme ich dann alle meine Konten zurück? Ich habe z. B. einige BTC-Konten, eth, algo und ada, aber sie sind nicht mit meinem privaten Schlüssel verknüpft. Wenn ich sie auf einem neuen Gerät wiederherstellen würde, wäre es dann nicht völlig leer und ich müsste die Konten erneut hinzufügen? Woher weiß das Programm, welche Konten hinzugefügt werden müssen?

Ich hoffe, ich erkläre das gut genug, lassen Sie es mich wissen, wenn nicht.

Ich weiß, dass ich meine Konten auf meinem Desktop habe, von dem aus ich sie wiederherstellen könnte, aber ich versuche zu verstehen, was passieren würde, wenn ich auch den Zugriff darauf verlieren würde.

Hi there.

Your accounts are iterated. Meaning together with your private key and an index 0, 1, 2, etc you get your accounts.

When restoring, Ledger can just iterate/count up and check if that account has been used. It stops counting, when an account has no blockchain activity. This is also the reason, why you cannot create a new account without transfering some tokens to your newest one (with the highest index).
This iterative wallet generation is called a deterministic hierarchy or so.

The names of your accounts will be lost though.

All the answers so far a really good overviews of how this works technically. But the simple answer is, you put your seed phrase into a new device, click add account ie Bitcoin and then all of you Bitcoin will show up.

google BIP-39 and read up on how hierarchical derived wallets work. basically the private key is the root of a metaphorical tree, and the tree goes down infinitely with a bunch of public addresses. you can go down the tree just fine but you can’t move back up unless you know your secret phrase. this tree is restored the same if you put your phrase into another ledger, and all you have to do is install the apps for whatever coins you use and it’ll just work.

All your accounts are magically calculated from your unique seed phrase.

The process if called address derivation, and you can learn more by searching with google: bip39, bip32 and bip44.

Imagine the seed phrase & device as the key to the house. You enter the seed phrase into the new device and presto chango you have a new key to the same house.

You can also restore other wallets to mm or the other way suck as trustwallet – all this is why your seed is same as holding a bag of cash in public – seed= your zipper hand on the bag – give that up and your cash is up for grabs
