I’ve checked the Bitbox out and I’m in the same camp as you. Pity, they do not support many blockchains out there. I’ll go with them nevertheless:

1. As you said, open source! I’m not in the IT field, but other users are and could check themselves if there’s sth odd or not.
2. The team behind Bitbox is trustworthy. Jonas Schnelli, the co-founder is even a Bitcoin Core developer!! The other one Douglas Bakkum has got a masters degree in mechanical engineering and bio-engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology
3. The team is open about vulnerabilities in the community and help out even others (like showing other companies about their flaws).
4. Talked to the support: Friendly and helpful. And: Received answers in some hours (not in weeks as in Ledger’s case).
5. Reviews on Trust Pilot are very, very good. Lots of satisfied customers. Check the Ledger’s one and you will cry.
6. You can use directly in the app Tor.
7. They have this feature called anti-clepto protection.

I’m going to transfer my holdings either to Bitbox or hot wallets. I know it’s not a perfect solution but the trust is gone and I’m actually happy it happened now as I just started my crypto journey!

Re. the sd card: Yes, at first I thought that is a no-go. But they say it’s just for backup. You will store it at a different place, never touch it again. Same procedure as with your paper back-up. So that’s what I think works.

Maybe they will get more and more feedback from users to include more blockchains in the future. But for now, I’ll be able to sleep well again.
