My experience – a few advantages of hardware wallets:
**1. Allows a private key to be generated offline = best for security.**
In principle, one could generate a seed phrase offline and write it down. Hardware wallets provide an easy way to generate a private key offline. This is critical because creating private keys while online (e.g. in a web browser extension like metamask) are more easily hacked. The most likely way to lose funds is either by losing passwords/seed OR through a web/computer vulnerability. A hardware wallet helps on the first front and largely solves the second.
**2. Interacting securely with dApps.**
A hardware wallet lets you approve transactions without the private key being sent to your computer/phone (which is connected online). It’s the approval that’s sent to your computer.
As a tip, I’ve had both Ledger and Trezor wallets. I find Ledger is much easier to use with Metamask. Trezor doesn’t have as good support for connecting to Metamask and interacting with dApps.
