Ledger always generates 24 word seed phrases. If your seed phrase is only 12 words, it was not generated by a ledger device.

Now whether it safe or not, no one can say, not knowing how your seed phrasewas generated. 12 word seed phrase with good entropy (ie ransomness) cannot be bruteforced by current computers or GPU, so if you keep it secret, it is safe.

Only if you want to use a passphrase, then yes, otherwise, not really. But you should want to use passphrase for hodl bags

Setup a passphrase

When you first set up a Ledger device, you’ll be prompted to generate a **24 word recovery phrase** – and so this 12 word recovery phrase is almost certainly from another wallet (MetaMask generates 12 word recovery phrases if I’m not mistaken).

Thankfully, you can always send your funds out to another temporary device or wallet and then once *all* of the funds are removed, you can reset your Ledger, generate a fresh new 24 word recovery phrase (which is **much** stronger than a 12 word recovery phrase) – and once you have everything set up – you can send your funds back to your device’s accounts (with the **new 24 word recovery phrase** setup).

12 words are plenty. The word combinations are 2048^12. That number is unfathomable. A lot easier to memorize 12 vs 24 as a second backup to a metal inscribed backup
