Gast::Crypto is always stored on the blockchains (on networks of servers that are on the internet)
Cryptos are never stored in centralised exchanges, and they are never stored in software or hardware wallets like ledger, metamask, trustwallet, exodus etc.
The only thing stored in the ledger is your 24 word recovery seed phrase, which is your key to access your crypto accounts on the blockchains. The ledger prevents your key to ever touch the internet or a computer, unlike software wallets that are vulnerable to malware.
Some front-ends, like metamask, can connect to the ledger, so they can use the ledger device to sagely sign your transactions with your keys.

Gast::These are some great questions!
Your funds aren’t ever stored „in“ the Ledger device. You can think of the Ledger as a purpose-built device that has 1 job: to create your 24 word recovery phrase (private key) in a safe manner (aka it shows the words on the Ledger device’s screen and **not** your computer).
If we take MetaMask as an example, they display these words on the computer when you create your MetaMask account – and so if your computer has malware or someone is monitoring your screen remotely – they can see these words and steal your funds remotely.
Now, if we go back to the example of the Ledger device, the words are only displayed on the physical device’s screen, and so you **know** that your 24 word recovery phrase was generated offline, and therefore **safe**.
Essentially, your Ledger device holds the private keys (the 24 word recovery phrase) that allows you to access your funds on the blockchain. In this manner, it’s easier to think of it as „your funds are located at a unique address on the blockchain“ and your Ledger device (aka the private keys) lets you unlock the door with your funds behind it.
Importantly, you can actually use your Ledger device (a cold/hardware wallet) in conjunction with MetaMask (a hot/software wallet) by connecting your Ledger and selecting the accounts tab and choosing „connect hardware wallet“.
In this manner, you’ll be able to use your Ledger device with MetaMask, however you’ll never expose your private keys to the internet, and so these MetaMask accounts will be secured by your Ledger device. [Here](https://www.ledger.com/academy/security/the-safest-way-to-use-metamask) is a wonderful piece of documentation detailing this process step-by-step, I highly recommend reading this, it should be very helpful!
