      > Or is everything stored in ledger

Basic education about crypto is important if you decide to own crypto.

Crypto is stored only in one place: the blockchains.

The only thing stored in your ledger is your recovery / seed phrase, which is basically your master key to all your crypto accounts.

So yes, the seed phrase will give you access to all your cryptos, when you enter it in another wallet, but it is not recommended to use software wallets, because it puts all your crypto at risk of getting stolen, as it will potentially compromise your seed.

If you ever potentially compromise your seed, you should never use it again (including all accounts created with that seed), even with your ledger device.

You should immediately move ALL your cryptos to accounts unrelated to the potentially compromised seed phrase.

Yes. Your crypto is never stored in any wallet. It is on the blockchain. Your seed phrase is the key to your crypto. So you can import your seed phrase into any BIP39 compatible wallet (soft wallet or hardware wallet) and access your crypto.

Yes, your assets are tied to your seed words… The hardware wallet just keeps your seedwords isolated from the internet, equally you need to have the same conviction keeping your seed words that you wrote down as safe and secure from anyone taking them physically.

As u/loupiote2 aptly mentioned (thanks again Lou!) – the most important part of this process is securing your [24 word recovery phrase](https://www.ledger.com/academy/crypto/what-is-a-recovery-phrase).

This 24 word recovery phrase will let you access your accounts from **any** Ledger device (or BIP39-compliant wallet) in the case of an emergency.

For example, in the situation that you perhaps lose or break your current physical Ledger device, you can use your 24 word recovery phrase to [restore](https://support.ledger.com/hc/en-us/articles/4404382560913-Restore-your-Ledger-accounts-with-your-recovery-phrase?support=true) your funds into a new physical Ledger device once you get a replacement.
