Hi – Multisig (multi-signature) does not inherently increase the number of possible combinations for a seed phrase. The number of possible combinations for a seed phrase is determined by the length of the seed phrase and the number of words in the BIP39 word list.

A standard BIP39 seed phrase consists of 12, 18, or 24 words chosen from a list of 2048 words.

The number of possible combinations is calculated as 2048 to the power of the number of words in the seed phrase.

So, a 12-word seed phrase has 2048^12 (approximately 2^132) possible combinations, regardless of whether it’s used for a single-signature wallet or a multisig wallet.

In a multisig setup, the additional security comes from the requirement of multiple signatures to authorize a transaction. This means that even if one of the signers’ devices or private keys is compromised, the funds remain secure because the attacker would still need the other required signatures to complete a transaction.

So, while multisig adds an extra layer of security, it does not directly increase the number of possible combinations for the seed phrase. Firstly, the difference in security isn’t meaningful in terms of the amount of entropy. Secondly, your math isn’t right in that you aren’t just doubling the number of possible combinations, but increasing it exponentially. (So 2024^(12+12)

The main benefit from multisig isn’t that you get more entropy, but that you can boost redundancy without losing security. (As well as do things like mix vendors, have a 3/5 quorum,etc) The main issue with multisig is that you are also making your backups more complicated. If you want to do the multisig route, something like Casa is probably a good place to start, as it walks you through the process and provides excellent documentation along the way. You could also try something like Blockstream Green that provides quite an accessible multisig implementation where they add a signer that is tied to 2fa.
