What they have is practically Shamir backups, across 3 shards. Trezor also allows you to create this, but with more shards if you want.

Difference is, with Trezor you’re in control of where you keep these shards. For Ledger you are not in control, but instead it’s stored by their selected partners (for what I would describe as a hefty monthly cost as well..)

Now, Ledger might say it’s all encrypted when uploaded etc, but all you need to do to recover is to combine 2 of the 3 shards.

This is problematic for many reasons:

Firstly, what happens when the right type of agencies show up with the right type of paperwork? Surely the shards are going to be handed over.

Secondly, by having 3 designated partners, these become massively attractive targets for hackers and other attackers. They know where it’s stored, because it’s centralized.

Thirdly, it would be impossible for the recovery service to encrypt these shards in such a way that only you, the owner of the seed, would be able to decrypt them. If that was done, we’d be back to the start, and you might as well just ensure you’ve secured the seed yourself.

Finally, what is clear to all now, is that the ledger hardware wallet itself, through firmware updates, can make changes to what many was lead to believe was impossible to change, namely the secure chip storing your private keys.

And since their software is closed source, we’re back to “trust me bro”, which isn’t really good enough for the product they sell. And it doesn’t help they’ve got a poor track record for keeping customer data private, nor how poorly this whole fiasco has been handled.

You can make a shamir backup yourself from your seed.

Yes they could. Things would probably have gone far better for them if the had done something like release a Shamir Shares app that you could install from the marketplace and then create Shamir Shares from your existing seed. (And then perhaps a few months later, offer some service where they would custody one or more of the shares for you)

It has already been done by a third party developer https://github.com/aido/app-sskr-check – you’ll also have the option to use Recover with your own setup if you wish

Ledger would have been better off using EIP-4337 – allowing other defined and trusted wallets to restore your original. EIP-4337 is the solution.

Lhe problem is that in general users are not good with OPSEC.

Look at how many people leaked their seed or lost them (including very tech-savvy people!).
