same way you can receive money to your bank account without your Bank app being open 🙂

Your coins are not actually stored in the device, neither is coins stored in a wallet **app**. Your public key (aka address) which is for receiving coins is always public on the blockchain and “live”.

When you generate your addresses on the device, and you actually know it or memorise it (at least the beginning & end characters), you be absolutely sure that that is your address (synonymous to Bank Account Number) and can always send coins to the address

You only plug in your device when you either want to install apps on the device or to send out coins (you must press the 2 buttons on the device to sign the transaction).

Your public key is available even without the device. There really isn’t much security needed around a public key.

It is when actually spending those funds that you need to interact with your private key, with which you will need your device to confirm the transaction.

You can, yes..when you go to deposit and it tells you to click the two buttons on the Ledger, click “Don’t have your device” and it will show you your wallet address..even update your amount of coins after the process finishes without actually needed your Ledger

      Yes
Your coins are sent on the blockchain, where your wallet addresses always exist. Your Ledger device is just needed to sign transactions from your wallets. So, to receive it doesn’t need to be plugged in – assuming you know your public address- but to send it does.

your ledger holds the private key which controls your wallet, but it isn’t the wallet itself. One could send tokens to any address out there and the blockchain “remembers” it, accessing it is just a matter of whether you have the corresponding private key and the wallet app you use is a convenient interface for doing that. This is the same reason anyone can steal your funds if they know your private key.
