Ich lese die Beiträge und starre auf meinen Ledger und frage mich, was ich tun soll. Die Vorstellung, dass ein Firmware-Upgrade meinen geheimen Schlüssel einer “vertrauenswürdigen” dritten Partei zugänglich machen könnte, ist entnervend, aber wie Ledger gesagt hat, haben wir ihnen immer vertraut, dass sie das nicht tun… wenn ich also zu einer anderen Hardware-Wallet wechsle, muss ich ihnen jetzt vertrauen, dass sie das nicht auch tun. Wir alle lernen schnell, dass nichts jemals vertrauenslos war. Warum sollte ich also einem anderen Wallet-Hersteller vertrauen? Was unterscheidet sie von Ledger?

Same reason some people choose to use Linux distros over Apple or Microsoft. Use Bitwarden over lastpass. Use GrapheneOS over iOS or Android OEM builds. Veracrypt over other encryption options.

Open source isn’t full proof. It’s not even guaranteed for something malicious to be found right away. But, with closed source it won’t ever be found, so there’s not even the possibility of discovering so it is fully dependent on faith. There’s no waiting game of holding off on updates to see if anything is discovered to hopefully protect yourself by not rushing to get the newest update right away.

It gives some people peace of mind that even though safety isn’t guaranteed that having the possibility to check in is better than nothing.

As a software engineer, im looking at this objectively.

I’m asking the main question right now, which is: Is the fact that Trezor is open source, really make a difference compared to the amount of trust I give to either company?

I think no, I’ve trusted ledger this long, what changes?
