The passphrase is a completely different set of wallets.

It’s completely different in the sense that two different 24 word seed phrases would be two different wallets.

The 24 words becomes your base and then each additional passphrase that you create after the fact is essentially a completely different set of sub wallets with different addresses.

You need your main 24 words to access the base layer and then you need to know your passphrase to get to the actual account.

So yes, you would need to move your assets to that new address and then in the future you will need to know both your main base 24 words plus your 25th word passphrase.

      Hey there,

Adding a passphrase to your 24-word seed on a Ledger actually creates a whole new set of accounts – think of it like an entirely new wallet. Your existing keys and accounts remain as they are, untouched. If you want to use the new passphrase-protected accounts, you’d need to transfer your funds to them, yes.

For recovery, you’re not tied to Ledger hardware. Any wallet that supports the standard protocols for deriving accounts from a seed phrase and allows for a passphrase (sometimes called the 25th word) can be used to recover your accounts. Just be super careful about where you enter your seed and passphrase – always use trusted and secure methods.

Here’s an article that explains how to create a passphrase-protected account with your Ledger:

      Stay safe!
